SUMMARY:

This research investigates the place of whiteness in confronting racism in schools, focusing on the actions of white Portuguese language teachers in schools around the UFRRJ – IM, in Nova Iguaçu. It starts from the understanding that structural racism permeates the school environment, manifesting itself in exclusions, silencing, and erasure of the historical and cultural contributions of Black individuals. In this context, whiteness is understood as a place of social privilege and invisible power that influences pedagogical practices and relationships between teachers and students. The study seeks to analyze how white teachers perceive and address racial issues in the classroom, identifying the challenges, resistance, and potential involved in building an educational practice committed to equity. To this end, it is linked to Law 10.639/03, critical racial literacy, and decolonial education perspectives, emphasizing the need for teacher training that recognizes privileges and takes an active stance in social transformation. Methodologically, a qualitative, narrative approach is adopted, using comprehensive interviews (Kaufmann, 2013) as a data collection tool. This choice seeks to value teachers' narratives, revealing experiences, meanings, and subjective barriers that white teachers face in their engagement in anti-racist practices. By giving visibility to these narratives, the research aims to contribute to the strengthening of anti-racist education, encouraging white teachers to recognize their role and act as allies in the fight against racism, promoting more critical, inclusive, and equitable school environments.
