This work seeks to analyze Darcy Ribeiro's book, *Processo Civilizatório* (Civilizing Process), on civilizing processes, considering the role he attributes to education in relation to what is termed "societies of backwardness." The meanings of categories such as civilizing processes, evolutionary acceleration, technological revolution, and societies of backwardness are discussed. Pierre Bourdieu's conceptual framework is used as a theoretical and analytical tool to analyze Darcy Ribeiro's position in the intellectual field and the book's configuration within the educational field.
