Real Bodies and Authentic Images (CRIA):Development and Evaluation of the Applicability and Effectiveness of a Positive Body Image Educational Program in Physical Education.
Body Appreciation, Intervention, Adolescent, Student
Body image can be defined as the mental picture a person has about their own body. It is
multifaceted and comprises thoughts, feelings, and behaviors stemming from this image.
Evidence suggests that adolescents of school age may experience problems related to negative
body image (body dissatisfaction, internalization of beauty standards, body comparison, teasing,
and others) and may suffer different impairments because of it (risky use of aesthetic products
and procedures, dangerous weight loss or muscle mass gain strategies, and intensification or
appearance of pathological symptoms). Interventions in body image at school have shown
promise in preventing or alleviating these problems. Positive body image, understood as an
attitude of respect and love for one's own body, not only helps avoid such problems but also
allows individuals to live with vitality and joy. Physical Education in Schools (PE) has been
identified as crucial in the development of positive body image. Thus, the present study aims to
develop and evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of an educational program focusing on
positive body image, in PE classes, for students in Elementary and High School. This qualitative-
quantitative research, with a descriptive, exploratory, and quasi-experimental approach, is a
randomized controlled study in Clusters (Groups). It will be conducted in two phases. The first
phase will involve the realization of focus groups, the data from which will be analyzed using
Bardin's content analysis technique and will theoretically and methodologically support the
development of the CRIA (Real Bodies and Authentic Images) educational program. The second
phase will involve the application and evaluation, using questionnaires and psychometric scales,
of the applicability and effectiveness of the CRIA educational program on positive body image
variables and correlates. Focus groups and the application of the educational program will take
place in two Elementary and High Schools in Rio de Janeiro, with adolescents aged between 11
and 18 years old. Data collected in the second phase will be collected at 4 time points: 1) Before
the application of CRIA; 2) Immediately after; 3) Three months after; and 4) Six months after.
They will be analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistical treatment where the significance
adopted will be p value ≤ 0.05. Additionally, for the statistical tests, SPSS Version 20 Software
will be used. It is expected that through the completion of this study, an effective and applicable
educational program promoting positive body image will be obtained for Physical Education in
Schools.
