This dissertation, Babies and Early Childhood Education: living through gaps, aims
to reflect the ways in which Early Childhood Education institutions receive and respond
to the insertion of babies. Where and how are babies in education? Where and how is
baby education? What does the education of babies answer for them and for society?
From these questions, we seek to understand: teaching with babies by looking at their
job as a gesture of welcoming and caring for the baby. The baby as a person in a
relationship and its place in society. And Early Childhood Education as a space that
welcomes babies in an educational, political and social context. The theoretical analysis
starts from the dialogue with the thoughts of authors from different fields of knowledge,
which seeks to conceptualize babies, Early Childhood Education and their intertwining
with society, through the studies of Donald Winnicott, Hannah Arendt, Jorge Larrosa
and Ailton Krenak . The research was carried out in a Municipal Day Care Center in
Rio de Janeiro, and its methodology is autoethnography. The field of investigation
focuses on the analysis of the researcher's record notebook as a baby teacher, seeking to
understand these tissue records in everyday life along with them as interactions and
adverse relationships in space. The narratives written and evidenced by the researcher
bring the doors of the daycare center as an allegory, as a way of investigating the
presences and absences, movements and permanence, freedom and control present in
the daily life of the daycare center. In this sense, we think about the doors that open and
close to babies in the educational context, pointing to the small cracks that open up in
the co-living with/of babies.
