CITIES COME FROM THE RAILWAY TRACKS AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS COME FROM THE CITIES: paths of local history in Baixada Fluminense
Keywords: Baixada Fluminense, Schools, Historical Generis, Local History and Railway Memory.
This doctoral qualification project focuses on the study of the emergence of educational institutions in Baixada Fluminense after the arrival of the tracks and the train route of the old Estrada de Ferro Rio D'Ouro. The railroad built during the Brazilian Empire began at Quinta do Caju, passed through the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and ended in Recôncavo da Guanabara, the region of the old Nossa Senhora da Piedade de Iguaçu. The railroad and its feeder lines operated for approximately 87 years, and were discontinued in 1970. The railroad helped the population not only in its social functions, such as facilitating access to drinking water or human movement, but also facilitated local progress. In light of these reflections, the objective of this study will be to verify how the railroad influenced the emergence of educational institutions in this region of Vila de Iguassu, and how this process occurred in this territory of Baixada Fluminense, a typically rural location. In addition to observing the processes of appearance, disappearance, scarcity and permanence of at least six educational institutions dedicated to the education of individuals from Vila Iguassu. From this perspective, the dialogue of this research aims to reflect on regional particularities and its local history based on the concepts of railway memory, education and historical generis. The empirical approaches of the guiding concepts will start from qualitative aspects considering the reflections on the arrival of school entities in this location of present-day Nova Iguaçu.
