KEYWORDS: Education in the Municipality of Itaguaí. History of Education. 

ABSTRACT This research investigates the formation of the public education system in the municipality of Itaguaí, going through all historical formation to reach contemporary times. Understanding the formation of an education system is important to understand the current measures and policies that the municipality adopts today, in addition to contributing to the city's historical memory. The project aims to research the history of education in the municipality of Itaguaí with the aim of understanding the emergence of the municipality's educational system, the interests involved and analyzing the current public policies that have been structured over the years and their actions in the face of the covid-19 pandemic. (2020 and 2021). The methodological path  adopted was bibliographic review and documentary analysis, based on three research axes, namely: 1 – The municipality of Itaguaí 2 – Formation of the Department of Education and Schools 3 – Public Policies. To construct the research, we are in contact with readings that involve debates on Local History, History of Education, History of Itaguaí, official documents from the Department of Education available on digital platforms, school censuses and research that involves the state of the art within the theme.
