SUMMARY:

The general objective of this research is to analyze repressive actions directed at teachers, as well as the impacts of the Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985) on the educational field in the city of Nova Iguaçu, Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro State. The adopted methodology is based on three main axes: (a) the analysis of the history of local education in articulation with the political dynamics of the municipality; (b) the valorization of the memory of the subjects involved in the educational process—teachers, students, and principals; and (c) the investigation of the consequences and legacy of the Civil-Military Dictatorship in the educational context of Nova Iguaçu. Therefore, interviews will be conducted, in addition to bibliographic references, to capture the memories and trajectories of the teachers who worked in the schools—at different levels—during the period from 1964 to 1985, aiming to reconstruct aspects of the educational experience under the effects of the Civil-Military Dictatorship. Thus, by engaging with the history of the municipality and the history of education in the Iguaçu region, we seek to understand the impact of the Military Dictatorship on the actions of teachers and principals who, in some way, opposed the anti-democratic regime. We also intend to highlight the impact of more than two decades of authoritarian rule on local education, marked by intense political unrest and the alternation of eleven mayors in the first ten years of the Military Dictatorship in Nova Iguaçu, culminating in a decline in the quality of education in schools previously considered model schools; precarious school infrastructure; and teacher pay gaps. Thus, this research becomes especially relevant given the rise of the far-right and recurring calls for the return of authoritarian regimes, as it seeks to demonstrate that the Military Dictatorship was profoundly damaging to the educational field in Nova Iguaçu. Beyond the structural compromise of education, the period was marked by constant surveillance, systematic repression, and an environment of fear imposed on teachers. This work contributes to confronting this process and the erasure of local resistance and leadership. In this sense, revisiting the history of education in Iguaçu during the Civil-Military Dictatorship becomes not only an academic necessity, but an act of resistance. This critical reappraisal highlights the consequences of repression, surveillance, and the precariousness of teaching, as well as denouncing the mechanisms of silencing that persist to this day.
