SUMMARY:

The present research aims to analyze the working and health conditions of teachers working in the Youth and Adult Education (EJA) modality within the state public educaction system of Rio de Janeiro. The choice of EJA as a specific field of investigation stems from its historical formation, marked by precariousness, discontinuity, and its association with the subaltern sectors of Brazilian Society – namely, the workink class. The study is based on the hypothesis that the structural particularities of EJA, exacerbated by the intensification of neoliberal policies in the post-2016 contexto, directly contribute to the deterioration of teachers’ health, especially regardin psychological suffering or teacher malaise, understood as na expression of the processes of precarization and alienation of teaching labor in Brazil. The methodological approach is qualitative in nature and guided by the Marxist theoretical framework of historical-dialectical materialism. The investigation is parto f na interinstitutional research effort coordinated by the Laboratory for Reserarch on State, Power, and Education (LIEPE) and integrates various lines of study across municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This particular research focuses specifically on EJA teachers. The methodological procedures involve a triangulation of sources, organizes aroud three main instruments: (a) collection of oficial data related to teachers’ health in the public school system, through documentary research and consultation of transparency portals; (b) application of a statewide online questionnaire, developed in partnership with State Union of Education Professionals (SEPE-RJ); and (c) semi-structured interviews with EJA teachers. These interviews are considered essential to capturing the specific characteristics of the phenomenon of theacher malaise, by articulating quantitative and qualitative data. The study aims to contribute to the developmet of public policies that address the effects of neoliberalismo on education, support strategies to confront teacher illness, and strengthen collective of resistance within public schools.
