RESUMO:

The objective of this paper is to present the experiences developed in the Center of Community Activities of São João de Meriti - CAC / SJM, where operates a community school, the School of CAC. This is an ongoing doctoral research in which an initial study was conducted on the history of the space foundation that aims to promote culture and education for the residents of that region of Baixada Fluminense. We found that the origin of the SJM CAC came from the initiative of Social Movements agents who organized themselves for the founding of this important equipment. At this moment, the research advances to the field work, where we witness in locus the formative practices that circulate in this space. As a methodological practice, we use the theoretical-discursive documental analysis of academic works that narrate the history of the founding of this space and for data collection we chose to dialogue with the teachers and founding partner of the institution. Early research results demonstrate that the São João de Meriti Community Activities Center has faced challenges to remain in operation for 30 years. In this perspective, the CAC has taken advantage of the work of volunteer parents and extension projects linked to the State University of Rio de Janeiro, which through their researchers develop projects to encourage reading and continuing education for literacy teachers. We also found that CAC has been recognized as a space that promotes culture and education for the surrounding community.
