Introduction: Body image is the mental representation of one's own body. The study of body image in university students is particularly important because this group has been considered at risk for developing changes related to body image. For this purpose, it is essential to use instruments that have adequate psychometric qualities in the Brazilian context. Objective: to perform the cross-cultural adaptation and check the psychometric qualities of the Physical Activity Body Experiences Questionaire (PABEQ) and the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale–3 (PACS-3) for university students in Brazil. Methodology: This research was divided into six distinct stages, the first five being related to the cross-cultural adaptation process of the instruments, namely: translation, synthesis meeting, back-translation, expert committee and instrument pre-test. For the first four stages, different professionals were used to make the scales content valid, namely: methodologist, body image specialist, psychologist, Portuguese language specialist, English language specialist and a member of the target population, in addition to the author and advisor of this dissertation. In the fifth stage, pre-test, three separate collections were carried out, online and individually with each participant. Forty-five male and female participants aged between 18 and 30 years (= 23.13 years; SD: +/- 2.8 years) participated in this stage. The sixth stage consisted of the psychometric analysis of the PABEQ and PACS-3 instruments. This was carried out using online data collection, in order to assess the construct validity and reliability indices of the instruments. A total of 1,610 university students (786 men and 824 women) of both sexes, aged between 18 and 30 years (= 22.69 years; SD: +/- 3.12 years), from public and private universities participated in this stage. five Brazilian regions. The collection instruments were PABEQ; PACS-3; The Body Appreciation Scale (BAS); The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale–4 (SATAQ–4); The Rosenberg Self-Steem Scale (RSES) and sociodemographic questionnaire. The pre-test and psychometric validation collections were carried out online due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the world since 2020, lasting until the present date. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Spearman's correlation test, Cronbach's alpha were used. SPSS (version 20.0) and LISREL® (Version 8.8) programs were used. Results: In the cross-cultural adaptation process, the PABEQ and PACS-3 scales underwent semantic, idiomatic and cultural adjustments to acquire content validity. In the CFA, the results of X2 / GL and RMSEA presented value above the reference level (< 3 and < 0.08, respectively) in the PABEQ and PACS-3 scales, both in the female and male versions. The other adjustments (GFI, AGFI, NFI, NNFI and CFI) were considered adequate (> 0.90), such as: (X2 / GL = 22.34 / RMSEA = 0.161 / GFI = 0.975 / AGFI = 0.957 / NFI = 0.954 / NNFI = 0.945 / CFI = 0.960) - female PABEQ; (X2 / GL = 14.53 / RMSEA = 0.131 / GFI = 0.979 / AGFI = 0.967 / NFI = 0.964 / NNFI = 0.961 / CFI = 0.970) – male PABEQ; (X2 / GL = 41.7 / RMSEA = 0.275 / GFI = 0.948 / AGFI = 0.939 / NFI = 0.940 / NNFI = 0.942 / CFI = 0.947) - PACS-3 female, and (X2 / GL = 28.33 / RMSEA = 0.223 / GFI = 0.969 / AGFI = 0.963 / NFI = 0.965 / NNFI = 0.968 / CFI = 0.970) - Male PACS-3. Regarding reliability, the female PABEQ ranged from α = 0.643 - 0.789; the male PABEQ ranged from α = 0.719 - 0.854, the female PACS-3 ranged from α = 0.869-0.957 and the Male PACS-3 ranged between α = 0.904 - 0.967. Regarding convergent validity, the scales also showed a significant association with the other gold standard instruments used in this study, ranging from moderate to strong. Conclusion: This research presents the initial psychometric results of the PABEQ and PACS-3 scales for Brazilian university students. Most of the analyzed psychometric indicators are within what is recommended in the literature. However, the X2 / GL and RMSEA indicators showed unsatisfactory results. Therefore, for the use of scales in Brazil in investigations on the body image of young university students, it is necessary to continue the study, with new data collection, preferably in person, when the sanitary conditions in Brazil in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic are appropriate. Future studies are suggested for this purpose.
