SUMMARY:

The present project discusses important points about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people's mental health and the issue of medicalization as a predominant response. It is true that social isolation and changes in routine can lead to symptoms such as: anxiety, sadness, insomnia and other emotional problems. Added to this, it is understandable that people face difficulties during this period of concentration and social deprivation. However, it is important to emphasize that the approach to mental health should not be limited to medicalization alone. Public policies should consider the importance of strengthening the Psychosocial Care Network and ensuring access to these services, combined with the option of drug treatment, when necessary. A balance between approaches is considered fundamental, recognizing that medicalization is not the only solution and that each individual may respond differently to different types of intervention. The practical study of the work will be carried out through a documentary analysis of psychotropic medications dispensed in two pharmacies with manipulation in the municipality of Barra Mansa, in the state of Rio de Janeiro; before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose will be to verify whether there was an increase in the consumption of "controlled" drugs during the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly as a consequence of the increase in psychological distress during this period.
