Starting in the 1980s, a critical movement arose in relation to the pathologizing clinical approach, which blames the student or the family for school failure. The debate led to the constitution of critical educational school psychology, a perspective that sought alternatives for the justifications and models of attention to school complaints that are now widely used by psychologists. In the midst of this debate and as the challenge of not limiting the school complaint to psychopathological phenomena, we observe a growing resistance to the integration of the clinical approach in the interventions of the school psychologists. Any mention of a clinical model of care and intervention against school complaints is considered to be antithetical to a critical perspective of the psychologist's performance in school quests. The objective of this work is to analyze the foundations of the critique of the clinical model of approach to school questions, built in the 80s of the 20th century. The established hypothesis is that the critique of the clinical model of care for school complaints identified an intervention based on the contributions of the clinical-medical field and of psychometric trends, associated with the ideology of efficiency, to the clinical field, and restrict the scope of the clinic and create a series of resistances to the assimilation of contributions from the clinic for the understanding and intervention of the psychologist who attend school complaints. In addition, it is verified that the critical perspective was not able to eliminate the tendency to medicalize and pathologize school quests, which still influences the paths of the schools to the field of health. Psychoanalysis, its concepts and its connections with the field of education, will guide the challenge of reintegrating the clinical dimension into the approach to school complaints. The research used a literature review and a case study as methodology. Our results indicate the possibility of incorporating clinical dimensions in the school environment, considering the historical and social processes associated with the complaints, to avoid reproducing a pathologizing approach.
