SUMMARY:

University life can be a source of stress and exhaustion, which can also lead to the development of Burnout Syndrome. Exhaustion manifests itself in students through three dimensions: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization and Personal Efficacy. This study aimed to investigate the performance of Executive Functions in university students and its association with Burnout Syndrome in two stages. Study I consists of a systematic review that discusses the results published in the last 10 years of studies that evaluate Burnout and cognitive and executive performance in students, available in the PubMed, Scielo and Lilacs databases. Eight studies were selected based on the criteria of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses) protocol. The results showed that individuals with Burnout present more subjective complaints and in self-report measures, with losses associated with emotional regulation and self-control functions. Only two studies reported cognitive deficits in working memory, sustained attention, response inhibition, interference control and problem-solving skills. Due to methodological differences and variability in results, the effects of burnout on college students are unclear. Therefore, study II sought to analyze the level of symptoms of Burnout Syndrome and Anxiety, Depression and Stress in university students and their association with Executive Functions. 156 university students enrolled in universities in Rio de Janeiro participated, aged between 18 and 30 or more. To measure these variables, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-SS), the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale and for EF, the Barkley Executive Dysfunction Rating Scale (BDEFS) were used. High levels of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization and low Personal Efficacy were found, in addition to high Anxiety symptoms. There was a significant difference between the means of students with and without Burnout and also a moderate correlation in the MBI-SS variables, BDEFS scores and dysexecutive symptoms index. Thus, the findings will be relevant for understanding executive changes related to burnout and new possibilities to be adopted for stress management in the academic context.
