SUMMARY:

The gender-neutral language is a complex topic which has been debated many times. Based on the
assumption of construct partiality of social and linguistic signs, the main idea of this study is to
establish an overview about the Brazilian Portuguese historical movement and its connection with
of non-binary people identity. From the conception that goes beyond grammatical gender, the
theoretical foundation of this study stands on theorists who analyze the notion of identity and
performativity like Butler (2003) and Preciado (2014), as well the conception of language
proposed by Bagno (2007).
