SUMMARY:

Physical activity is associated with a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety. Studies show that physical exercise increases the release of neurotransmitters, such as endorphins and serotonin, which participate in mood regulation and stress reduction (Craft & Perna, 2004). On the other hand, regular exercise has shown improvements in self- esteem and self confidence. In the first article, the goal was to evaluate the possible psychosocial and longitudinal effects of a supervised walking project and functional exercises at the level of stress and depression in students from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Seropédica campus. The research is of quantitative nature, descriptive and correlational, with longitudinal design. The sample of this study was composed by 21 participants who were present in the 12 weeks of project. To evaluate the level of depression, the Beck’s Depression Inventory was used; and for the level of stress, the Stress Perception Scale-10 was applied. The SPSS software was used to statistical analyses, and the significance level of 5% was adopted. When evaluating the severity of depressive episodes (BDI), before starting the project, 14.3% n=3) of the sample were classified as without depression, 19.1% (n=4) mild to depression, 33.3% (n=7) moderate to severe depression and 33.3% (n=7) with severe depression. After the interventions, 28.6% (n=6) of the sample were classified as without depression, 38.1% (n=8) severity of mild to moderate depression, 28.6% (n=6) from moderate to severe and 4.7% (n=1). Based on the results obtained, there was a reduction in the variables studied. It was concluded that a walk and functional exercises project was able to significantly reduce common mental disorders scores in university students from Brazilian public universities. In the second article, concerning mental health, authors indicate that depression is a common problem in the elderly and, added to this, we see the practice of regular physical exercise as a strategy for coping with depressive symptoms. Thus, this study aimed to compare the prevalence of depressive symptoms among physically active and insufficiently active elderly women of diferente age groups. For this, a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative approach was adopted. For data collection, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used. In addition, the analysis of the chi-square test showed significant statistical difference between the percentages of mild depression in the comparative between groups (p =0.04). Thus, the lowest depressive symptom scores refer to elderly women who practice physical exercise, indicating that there is a positive influence of regular physical activity in the prevention of geriatric depression. The results of both studies highlight the importance of physical activity at different ages.
