SUMMARY:

The research project aims to identify social representations of African-based religiosities in Baixada Fluminense, state of Rio de Janeiro. The aim is to understand how religious and non-religious people configure these spiritual practices. To achieve this objective, we intend to have the participation of 200 individuals, distributed equally between two groups - those who follow African-based religions and those who do not. Given this research structure, a structural approach to the theory of social representations will be used as the main theoretical framework, and a content analysis will be used to interpret the results, which will favor deep insights into social perceptions. Based on the consideration that, during the process of enslavement of the black African population on Brazilian soil, the notion of race was a key element used to cause the supposed inferiority of black people in relation to white Europeans, it is assumed that this same dynamic has influenced the way in which religiosities of African origin are understood by the population, considering that these practices, when initially reproduced by enslaved black people, and make reference to the black African population, sometimes these religiosities end up being considered inferior as well. Therefore, this study aims to reveal how these representations persist in contemporary times, contributing to a deeper understanding of the place of these religiosities in today's society.
