SUMMARY:

Population aging takes different forms and occurs in different contexts, reflecting the diverse cultures experienced in their respective societies with frameworks established by individuals historically. To this end, the aging process and cognitive, physical, psychological, and social changes are observed. Given this, there has been an increase in the number of elderly individuals in Brazil, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In this sense, there is a need for care for the elderly. Thus, with the proposal to provide comprehensive care for aging, Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly (ILPI) are presented. In ILPIs, the elderly are accompanied by a team of health professionals with the purpose of meeting the specific demands of the elderly. Therefore, it is important to reflect on the psychological factors associated with the use of psychotropic drugs in ILPI, given the context of deprivation of social interaction experienced by the elderly. The research used the Geriatric Depression Scale (EDG) and Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) as research tools. In view of this, analysis through active listening during the application of the instruments was also considered. From the instruments applied, it was possible to observe that elderly people who use psychotropic drugs (N = 12) present symptoms associated with depressive disorder (N = 9) and generalized anxiety disorder (N = 7), even with the use of antidepressants and anxiolytics. The results of the instruments applied show tangible responses to the absence of expected effects with the use of psychotropic drugs, indicating that there is no improvement in the symptoms reported by the elderly. During active listening, the elderly reported episodes of sadness, hopelessness, fear about the future, discouragement, low social interaction, and drowsiness that can trigger falls. Additional reports collected during the application of the instruments validate the results obtained. Given this scenario, this study aims to contribute to the clarification of research related to this issue, adding to the development of public policies aimed at the safe, effective, and rational use of psychotropic drugs in institutionalized elderly people.
