ABSTRACT

Amnesty constitutes a historical, political, and legal phenomenon that spans different moments in Brazilian society, taking on distinct meanings depending on the sociopolitical contexts in which it is mobilized. In the contemporary landscape, the topic has regained central importance following the political disputes arising from the 2022 elections and, especially, the events of January 8, 2023, establishing new points of comparison and tension regarding the historical experience of the 1979 amnesty. In this context, this research aims to investigate and identify social representations of amnesty among individuals who self-identify as ideologically right-wing and reside in municipalities within the Médio Paraíba region, seeking to understand the meanings attributed to the phenomenon in the current Brazilian political landscape. The theoretical framework adopted is the Theory of Social Representations, proposed by Serge Moscovici, with an emphasis on the Structural Approach and the Central Core Theory developed by Jean-Claude Abric. This is a qualitative study conducted with participants of both sexes, aged between 29 and 60, with at least a high school education. Data collection will be carried out using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Free Word Association technique—with “Amnesty” as the stimulus term—aiming to identify the constituent elements of the representation's probable central core and peripheral system. The data will be processed using IRAMUTEQ software and analyzed in light of the structural approach to social representations. The study is expected to contribute to an understanding of the processes of meaning production and circulation regarding amnesty, highlighting how a concept historically situated within the legal and political fields is appropriated, resignified, and incorporated into everyday knowledge amidst contemporary political disputes.
