RESUMO:

The Federal Council of Psychology does not understand transsexuality as a psychopathological condition, in agreement with a worldwide movement for depathologizing trans identities. However, there are notable practices of psychologists who contribute to limiting, impeding and marginalizing the transsexual identity experience. In this context, we sought to know the social representations of the transsexual person among students of psychology, since these can influence their positions and professional practices. 118 students from a public university in the state of Rio de Janeiro participated in the study. "Gender Change," "Gender," and "Identity" seemed to be the elements most strongly related to transsexuality. The work of the psychologist was understood as clinical and individual and the training regarding gender and sexuality, considered insufficient or unsatisfactory by the students
