SUMMARY:

The problems of dropout and repetition in the Brazilian educational system must be analyzed, taking into account the democratization process that has been installed in this system since the 1960s, when enrollments in elementary school increased. change in students' predominant class composition. However, this process was not fully implemented because a significant portion of these students did not complete elementary school at the expected time / age due to successive repetitions of the same year. which eventually led to dropping out. Evasion studies conducted so far suggest that this phenomenon has two distinct faces. This may be the result of a student's decision, which identifies with the strict meaning of the concept, or may be a consequence of a combination of school, socioeconomic and personal factors, in which the predominance of the first two. characterizes the decision more than the exclusion of the concept. It is just like an escape. That is, in this case, it results from the need for the student to enter the job market earlier, or the adverse school situation he / she faces - composition of the school program, teachers, school organization - process that ends with the expulsion of the student ( Gatti, 1983). Consequently, the implementation of educational policies that favor only the liberal principle of merit, based on equal opportunities for access, is a necessary but not sufficient condition for effective democratization.
