SUMMARY:

The present work aims to carry out a mapping of the process of constitution of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). The interest in the topic was due to the increasing diffusion of this diagnosis in the Brazilian context. Despite its intense use, few studies question it, seeking to situate the conditions that led to its proposition, as well as the effects of its establishment in the third version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III). In this work we intend to do so through a narrative bibliographic research. We use articles and books that have ODD as their main subject as a source of access to materials. Access to the articles took place through the PUBMED and Scielo portals. We structure this dissertation as follows: in the first chapter we present the concept of medicalization and the main debates about it, aiming to understand its uses and concepts. In the second chapter we discuss the emergence of childhood as an object of intervention by psychiatry and Child Psychiatry itself as a field of knowledge and practice. Furthermore, we present the constitution and precepts of Developmental Psychiatry and its relationship with Biological Psychiatry and classificatory manuals. Finally, in the third chapter we study the construction of ODD as a diagnostic category, placing its historical antecedents, the impasses to which it responds and its social and subjective effects. The results and discussion show the medicalizing and adaptive dimension of the category and the fragility of its diagnostic criteria.
