SUMMARY:

The present work aimed to discuss the diagnostic approximations between intellectual disability and autism, in view of the consequences for autism treatment proposals. The conceptualization of these terms is linked to the social understanding of the time and therefore their understanding varies over the years. The diagnosis of disorders and disabilities is performed by psychiatrists, neurologists and psychologists, and based on this, goals for attention, analysis and treatment are drawn. The importance of discussing this topic can be seen in the clinic, as the course of treatment results from the formulation of the differential diagnosis. It was possible to notice a relationship between some proposed treatments for autism in an educational perspective. The view of autism as a deficit, or a disorder close to intellectual disability that affects development, contributes to pedagogical/educational therapeutic methods. If the child has a delay, it is possible and necessary to educate him. The association of child psychiatry with educational methods of treating child suffering is historic. In addition, comparisons of the development of an autistic person with a non-autistic person can lead to a relationship of what is considered good or bad, in which the autistic development needs to be as close as possible to the non-autistic person to be considered good for the autistic person. community in which he is inserted. This should also not be an excuse to not watch and not seek the development of autistic people, we understand the importance of sensory and educational stimuli, we do not deny them. But this is an argument to think that the development of skills common to non-autistic people should not be the only, or the main way of dealing with these cases, to the point of running the risk of excluding these people from their condition of subjects. .
