SUMMARY:

The military profession has been identified as being naturally stressful, given the series of demands that need to be faced in their daily lives and exposure to extreme situations such as armed conflicts, involving risk to their own lives and those of their companions. In military training, such challenges are still present, since the military must be prepared to face situations that are determined by their superiors in the constitutionally foreseen action. It is in this sense that the present study aims to investigate the role of psychological robustness and self-efficacy in the self-esteem of cadets from the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras. Hardiness has been identified in the literature as an essential variable for the adequate performance and health of military personnel. Self-esteem and self-efficacy, together, appear as variables highly related to health and well-being indicators. The objective then is to investigate such variables in the context of the formation of the combatant officer of the Army. Despite the importance of the hardiness variable, they are scarce in the Brazilian context, a situation that worsens when considering military contexts in Brazil, mainly because there are no adequate instruments for measuring the construct. Thus, the objective of this study is also to validate a Spanish instrument for measuring hardiness, with authorization for this having already been obtained from the authors of the original study.
