Selective mutism (SM) is a social anxiety disorder characterized by the absence of speech in specific social situations, even though it is able to verbalize in other circumstances, that is, the failure of speech is not related to lack of knowledge or discomfort with language and therefore, it must be differentiated from speech disorders. Caregivers play a crucial role in promoting the child's education, being the role models and major influencers of the behavior displayed by the child. Many parents of mutist children have a reinforcing role on the mute behavior, and for this and other behaviors, the intervention with the parents, psychoeducation is of paramount importance in the intervention of the MS. Thus, the present project assumes the purpose of creating a program to psychoeducate parents and caregivers of children with MS, with guidance on techniques and strategies, in an online format, but which can be used in a face-to-face format. It is intended to evaluate the functioning of parents of children with MS and also to be based on the following guiding questions: “Is there any group Psychoeducation program with parents of children with selective mutism? How is it structured? How can working with the family of children diagnosed with selective mutism work with a positive role in their treatment? Are social anxiety and behavioral inhibition predictors of selective mutism and what is the relationship between them? The sample of this research will be constituted by convenience, and will participate parents of children with MS and children with MS up to 12 years of age who will be recruited through the online platform of ABRAMUTE (Brazilian Association of Selective Mutism and Childhood Anxiety). These participants can be from anywhere in Brazil, since all the interviews will be done online, but will be limited to a sample of up to 30 families. Therefore, taking this information into account, an exploratory study will be carried out, with a sample selected for convenience and a quantitative and qualitative approach, aiming to acquire a greater familiarity with the phenomenon. The results obtained will enable the increase of knowledge, hypotheses and the formulation of structured resolutions on the subject.
