Risk behaviors for the development of eating disorders in young people from São Tomé and Príncipe

Introduction: Eating behavior is determined by social and environmental aspects and a relationship developed with food, but some practices may represent a risk for the development of Eating Disorders. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of risk behaviors for Eating Disorders in young people in São Tomé and Príncipe. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 226 school and university students from São Tomé and Príncipe, aged between 18 and 29. Three self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data: a sociodemographic questionnaire and two instruments used to assess the general and specific psychopathological aspects of eating disorders: the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). Statistical analysis was carried out by calculating absolute and relative frequencies, mean, standard deviation, t-test and Pearson's correlation according to body image satisfaction categories. The significance level was set at 5% (p<0.05). The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Iguaçu University, under opinion no. 5.357.005, dated April 19, 2022. Results:70.8% of the participants were female, 80.09% were aged between 18 and 23, 45.1% were 11th to 12th graders, 43.8% had an income of more than 3 minimum wages, 68.6% had a TV in their home and 60.6% had access to the internet every day of the week. The frequency of risk behaviors for eating disorders was 1.3%. Body dissatisfaction was higher among women (74.08) compared to men (45.27; p< 0.01). Conclusion: Considering the relevance of the topic, further studies are suggested to better understand and analyze the results.
