SUMMARY:

This research dialogues with the memories inscribed in institutional, photographic records and administrative documents of the Instituto de Pesquisa das Culturas Negras – IPCN, on the threshold of its fifty years of existence in Rio de Janeiro-RJ, Brazil, using Jungian psychology to present a reflection on the strength and importance of women in the institutional management of IPCN. The presence of these women in the daily narratives of the Institute, and their absence in the records and documents. The case study divides the journey into 03 (three) periods of institutional existence: the first twenty years, when it experienced the peak of fecundity of anti-racist thought, born and disseminated there; emptying of the institution in the subsequent 20 (twenty) years and the current challenging moment for its revitalization. As a “thread in the labyrinth” it follows the footprints left by ancestry, starting from the itan of Osun in the creation of the world, from the mythology of the Yoruba people, to perceive connections between gourd – a symbolic object in different cultures; womb, consecrated and mythical territory of the female body; and, alchemical vessel, psychic space of transformation, according to the psychology of C. G. Jung.  The study presents the stages of overcoming “an unconscious hereditary conglomerate” regarding gender roles. Work on rebalancing institutional relationships. In the concepts of anima and animus, the presence of the symbolic representation of the experiences lived in institutional coexistence by those who came before. In the archetypal representation of Orisa Osun, feminine energy that symbolizes the strength and persistence of fresh water, which has cultural and biological importance for all humanity. Rites of passage and water as a mythical element of new beginnings. Understanding the process of individuation, in the collective body. The power to re-exist through looking at oneself and observing organic components as the continuity of strategies and social achievements driven by the resilience of IPCN women, from the inside out and from the outside in.
