SUMMARY:

The context of institutional care in Brazil has historical roots in social and racial inequality. The profiles of families, children, and adolescents who enter these institutions, and often remain for more than two years, are marked by socioeconomic vulnerability and institutional racism. Given this context, the aim of this research was to investigate the racial intersections within adolescent care institutions, focusing on racial literacy practices and proposing intervention strategies to improve care practices. The study was conducted in care homes in the Baixada Fluminense region, with the goal of capturing the perceptions of professionals and adolescents on the topic. Additionally, a racial literacy workshop was held for institutional care workers, aiming to transform and enhance their practices. Methodologically, data triangulation was employed using multiple methods: Integrative Literature Review (ILR), Focus Groups, Semi-Structured Interviews, and the Workshop. For data analysis and interpretation, Content Analysis and Core Signification methods were applied. The results indicated a lack of racial literacy within the institutions and insufficient training of professionals on racial issues. A significant divergence was also observed among professionals regarding what should or should not be addressed in care homes concerning this topic. Among adolescents, the absence of racial literacy appeared to hinder the processes of self-definition, self-assessment, and racial identity development. However, the results of the workshop were positive, highlighting the urgent need to racialize the care environment, making it truly protective for this group. The findings also underscored the importance of increased investment in research and projects that can contribute to the reformulation of institutional care practices through racial literacy
