This thesis aimed to understand the meanings attributed to psychiatric diagnosis by adolescents, analyzing how these designations are appropriated, negotiated, refused, and reframed in their lived experiences. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in psychiatric diagnoses in adolescence, a phenomenon shaped by medicalization processes and the complexity of contemporary contexts, which frequently reduce the singularity of suffering to clinical categories. This scenario demands analyses that privilege the voices of young people themselves, shifting focus from specialized knowledge to the complexity of lived experiences. Adolescence is understood as a period of intense subjective transformations, in which the subject is called upon to construct references about themselves amid multiple social, cultural, and institutional crossings. In this context, psychiatric diagnosis can operate both as a way to name and organize experience and as an element that can strain or restrict how the young person understands and narrates themselves. Methodologically, a qualitative study of narrative nature was conducted with seven adolescents. Data were analyzed through an interpretive approach, articulating discourse analysis and hermeneutic perspective, which enabled the understanding of meanings produced in life stories. Results show that diagnosis assumes multiple and singular meanings: for some adolescents, it functions as a resource for understanding and legitimizing suffering; for others, it is experienced pragmatically, as a tool for accessing rights and adapting to daily life; and in specific cases, it appears associated with experiences of suffering and inadequacy. Adolescents produce singular ways of positioning themselves before these designations, not always coinciding with meanings instituted by biomedical and social discourses. We conclude on the importance of care practices that are not restricted to the application of diagnostic categories, but that consider the singularity of each experience and promote spaces of qualified listening, capable of sustaining the complexity of psychic suffering in adolescence.
