RESUMO:

Music has been a highly studied and its applications widely debated in the scientific
community (KARAGHEORGHIS, 2012). Music apparently is capable of influencing
emotional states, and its positive relationship with the listener can be a useful tool in

maintaining optimal stress and anxiety levels (JUSLIN & VASTFALL;
KARAGHEORGHIS, 1997). This study aimed to verify possible effects of music on
psychophysiological variables of stress and anxiety of higher education students of
UFRRJ. 43 people of both sexes, mean age = 22 ± 2, were invited to participate in 3
relaxation sessions, in one of them listening preferably relaxing music (MRP), in
another listening to relaxing music suggested by the literature (MRS), and finally a
silence session (CTRL). All interventions lasted 25 minutes, the first 5 of silence,
followed by music listening, or silence in the case of CTRL, and followed by another 5
minutes of silence. All subjects remained in a supine position (belly up) during the
interventions. In addition, they were invited to answer the BAI Anxiety Questionnaire,
Perceived Stress PSS Questionnaire, State-Trait Anxiety IDATE, and a Visual Stress
and Relaxation Analysis Scale immediately before and after the interventions. In
addition, data such as, heart rate and blood pressure were assessed before and after the
interventions. For data analysis, the statistical program SPSS v. 20. was used and
adopted the statistical significance of P ≤ 0.05. In the values referred to stress,
relaxation and anxiety significant differences were found when comparing the values
before and after the musical interventions. Respectively: Stress (M = 3.38; SD = 2.85
vs. M = 1.74; SD = 2 , 11, P = 0.00), Relaxation (M = 5.67; SD = 2.36 vs. M = 7.87; SD
= 2.19, P = 0.00) and Anxiety (M = 11, 17; SD = 1.41 vs. M = 8.56; SD = 1.32, P =
0.00). Differences were found in pre and after systolic Blood Pressure, respectively:
SBP (M = 112.8; SD = 13.0 vs. M = 111.3; SD = 12.8, P = 0.00) and heart rate,
respectively HR (M = 69.5; SD = 10.1 vs. M = 67.8; SD = 12.7). Based on the results
found, this study points out that listening to preferred or suggested relaxing music may
alter psychological states and some physiological variables related to stress and anxiety.
