RESUMO:

 

This paper approaches the process of medicalization, that is, the growing influence of medical jurisdiction on human life and its sufferings. The latter, which were once part of the very act of living, are increasingly captured by explanations that regard them as a consequence of a disorder located in the body or specific organs, say the brain. The attempt to identify this disorder is related to the search for the unity of being in the body-mind duality, reason being the attribute itself of this unity and the affections (feelings, emotions and passions) bodily manifestations of the multiplicity of forces that lead to the misunderstanding of the being in relation to itself, since this self - the soul or the mind - is considered distinct from the body. Finally, the body, previously subjected to the logic of domination based on Christian theology, nowadays, facing biomedicine, emerges as an intervention point on the various psychological (soul) sufferings that afflict us. This intervention inherits a relation of dominion of reason over affects and to everything that escapes from the unity of being that, today, is inscribed on a somatic unity whose phenomena are reduced to biochemical reactions, becoming a key element of psychiatric medical practice.
