RESUMO:

This research aims to investigate how the process of constituting the diagnostic category of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and its spread among Brazilian psychiatrists took place. Initially, it is intended to present the concept of medicalization, pointing out the main authors and approaches to the theme, and then going deeper into the analysis of the so-called disease mongering (disease marketing). Since then, the aim is to examine the path of construction of the Oppositional Defiant Disorder diagnosis, relating it, on the one hand, to the transformations of the classificatory model and the advance of biological reductionism in psychiatry, and, on the other hand, to the deepening of medicalization of childhood. Finally, we will approach the dissemination of the diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Brazil, based on the analysis of congresses and scientific publications directed to the specialized public, namely: psychiatrists. From this mapping we will try to answer the following question: can the spread of the diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Brazil be considered an example of disease mongering?
