Psychometric properties of items from three phonological awareness assessment instruments.
Phonological Awareness; Literacy; Assessment Instruments; Psychometric Qualities.
Phonological Awareness is identified in the literature as one of the precursor skills for the acquisition of reading and writing, and the successful assessment of this skill can indicate to teachers and professionals in the area any difficulties faced by students. However, Brazil lacks standardized instruments for this assessment and a reflection on those that already exist is necessary. The present study aims to verify the psychometric properties of the items of three instruments for the assessment of Phonological Awareness: the Roteiro de Avaliação da Consciência Fonológica (RACF), the Prova de Consciência Fonológica por Produção Oral (PCFO) and the Consciência Fonológica: Instrumento de Avaliação Sequencial (CONFIAS), through Factor Analysis and Item Response Theory (IRT). Beside this, we will try to investigate the number of factorial dimensions of each instrument and the pattern of correlations between its items; highlight the parts of the skills continuum that the instrument subtests are evaluating; check the difficulty of the items and present the standard error of the items of each instrument; verify the presence of differential functioning (DIF) in the instrument items for gender and school year; and suggest the reformulation or exclusion of items to better suit the instruments. There are studies that indicate evidence of construct validity based on the internal structure of the RACF and the PCFO, but they do not address the psychometric qualities of the instrument items. This is where this study is inscribed, as we intend to carry out unprecedented analyzes on the items of RACF, PCFO and CONFIAS and suggest adjustments, if necessary.
