The military profession has been identified as naturally stressful, given the series of demands that need to be faced in their daily lives and exposure to extreme situations, such as armed conflicts, involving risk to their own lives and those of their companions. In the military formation, such challenges are still present, since they must be prepared to face situations that are determined by their superiors in the constitutionally foreseen action. It is in this sense that the present study aims to investigate the role of hardiness and self-efficacy in the self-esteem of cadets at the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras. Hardiness has been pointed out in the literature as an essential variable for the adequate performance and health of military personnel. Self-esteem and self-efficacy, together, appear as variables highly related to health and well-being indicators. Then, the objective was to investigate such variables in the context of the formation of the Army combatant officer. Despite the importance of the hardiness variable, there are few studies in the Brazilian contexto. This situation is aggravated when considering military contexts in Brazil, mainly due to the fact that there are no adequate instruments for measuring the construct. Thus, the validation of a Spanish instrument for measuring hardiness also appeared as an objective of the present study, with the authorization for this having already been obtained from the authors of the original study. For the measurement of the variables in the cadets of the four years of the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (AMAN), three questionnaires were applied: Occupational Hardiness Questionnaire (OHQ), Perceived General Self-efficacy Scale (EAGP) and the Rosemberg Self-Esteem Scale (EAR). Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS programs, both in the version 19. As a result, a strong correlation was obtained between the three studied variables, making it possible to validate the. In conclusion, it can be stated that the QHO is suitable for investigations in the Brazilian military context, at least with regard to AMAN. Investigations in other contexts, even in the military and considering Brazilian participants, will require new procedures for investigating the instrument's psychometric characteristics in the investigated context.
