SUMMARY:

High-level stress can compromise a student's physical and psychological health, interfering with
their quality of life and academic performance. Knowing that excessive stress affects both an
individual's health and productivity, as well as experiencing a pandemic can cause mental health
problems, the objective of this work was to evaluate the perceived stress and quality of life of
students upon returning to school. face-to-face activities and offer a group treatment protocol, in
an online format, for stress management, verifying its effectiveness through a randomized
clinical trial. The results are presented through three articles included in this thesis. The results
are presented through three articles included in this thesis. The first article, through a cross-
sectional study, found that of the 174 respondents, 64.94% had a high or very high perception of
stress, with an average score of 23.34 (SD=5.27). Quality of life and its association with
perceived stress were also assessed. The results showed rates below 50% for the dimensions
related to Limitation due to physical aspects, General Health Status, Vitality, Social Aspects,
Emotional Aspects and Mental Health, indicating high limitations in all these areas, with a
strong negative correlation with the perception of stress, especially with the Mental Health
dimension (r=-.661; p<0.01). In the second article, using a randomized clinical trial, the
effectiveness of group Stress Control Training (SCT) via telepsychology was observed for
reducing stress and depression levels and improving quality of life. After the end of the TCS, the
samples were compared and showed significant differences among themselves and, after the
intervention, only in the experimental group. At the end of the intervention, 80% of participants
achieved a reduction in stress phases, of which 60% were stress-free. There was a 45.37%
reduction in the average number of depressive symptoms and a significant improvement in five
domains of quality of life: Functional Capacity, Pain, Vitality, Social Aspects and Mental
Health. A strong association was identified between stress and depression, and these are
negatively correlated with several domains of quality of life. It is important to highlight that in
the follow-up assessment, carried out six months after the intervention, the assessment for stress
and depression remained significantly similar, with identification of a reduction in the average
number of depressive symptoms, suggesting maintenance of the results. In the last article, data
was presented on student satisfaction with the service model, analyzing factors such as
reception, training and the structure used. There was also a perception of change in relation to
the beginning of the intervention. Improvement was noticed after the intervention in 86.7% of
participants. There was high satisfaction among university students in all the factors analyzed,
with flexibility and ease highlighted as positive aspects in telepsychology. The results
demonstrated a vulnerability in the mental health of these students, associated with a greater
perception of stress, indicating the need for a greater offer of preventive activities such as
support groups, with special attention to stress management practices, investing in the use of
technologies in order to provide a greater number of students with access to psychosocial
support services.
