The medicalization of education in contemporaneity: the case of self-injury practice
medicalization, self-injury, education, psychology, contemporaneity
Medicalization can be considered as a consequence of the expansion of medical knowledge to various spheres of everyday life. This means that the causality of events previously attributed to multiple factors is now reduced to the medical-biological aspect. As a result of the phenomenon, the discourse that connects neurological problems to behavior considered deviant has been increasingly frequent in the educational context and health services for which most students with a school complaint are referred. The study to be performed will use the practice of self-injury as a conceptual operator to problematize medicalization in contemporary education. Thus, we seek to investigate whether the measures taken by the school produce or corroborate the medical practice. In order to achieve these objectives, a documentary study will be carried out through a consultation of all the user's files received by the CAPSi from a medium-sized municipality of Baixada Fluminense in the period between January and December 2017. The documentary survey will guide the selection of the schools in which the interviews will be conducted with professionals from the education network of the municipality researched for which it will be possible to reflect on the measures taken by the school teams in the face of cases of students who self-injury.
