SUMMARY:

Children in early stages of development (from 3 to 6 years old) go through periods of intense change and suffer both enviromental and maturacional influences. Their network with the outside world plays a relevant role in their development. Based on the Idea that the primary caregivers are the first mediators between the child and society, based on the concepts of parental educational social skills, those intentionally aimed at promoting development and learning, the establishment of positive parenting, this study aimed to investigate parental relationships and the socio- emotional development of children aged 36 to 72 months, from the report of their primary caregivers. For the research, the following instruments that were used: the Brazil Economic Classification Criteria (CCEB), socio-emotional domain questionnaire of the Dimensional Inventory of Child Development Assessment (IDADI), and the Parental Educational Social Skills Interview Guide (RE-HSE-P). The research involved 66 guardians of children residing in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, enrolled in private and public schools and daycare centers. From the results, moderate correlations stand out between Social Skills and Parental Educational Social Skills (r = 0.590; p < 0.01), weak negative correlations between Behavior Problems and Socio-Emotional Skills (r = -0.279; p < 0.05) and weak positive correlation between Negative Practices and Behavior Problems (r = 0.279; p < 0.05). There is also a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in socio-emotional skills between children from both school systems. Finally, it was hoped that the findings would facilitate the development of ways to produce knowledge about children's socio-emotional skills accessible to families and school institutions, as well as raise awareness about the importance of family interaction in fostering a safe environment for child development.
