SUMMARY:

This study aims to investigate coping strategies and self-esteem in the context of training for Brazilian Army Combat Officers. This training currently takes place over five years, with the first year at the Army Cadet Preparatory School (EsPCEx) and the following four years at the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN). Only one class will be considered, which will be analyzed over the four years of training at AMAN. The objective is to investigate how the use of coping strategies changes during the course and how this impacts the cadet's self-esteem. Both coping and self-esteem are topics that have been investigated since 2015 at AMAN. These variables have been shown in previous studies to be relevant in explaining high levels of mental health and well-being among cadets. Ideally, self-esteem and the use of effective strategies for problem-solving and promoting health and well-being are expected to increase. However, it is possible that we have three groups: (1) a group of cadets who maintained similar levels over the years (remaining in the same tertile); (2) a group of cadets who presented significant differences in self-esteem and positive coping from the first to the fourth year (therefore occupying the third tertile); and (3) a group of cadets who had a decline in self-esteem and coping (now occupying the first tertile). Comparisons are also planned in relation to the sex and specialty of the Cadet.
