SUMMARY:

Being born Black in Brazil implies carrying stigmas, stereotypes, and experiencing recurring forms of violence from birth. Racism, as a form of relational violence of subjugation, generates stress, suffocation, psychological distress, exhaustion, and can even lead to chronic problems throughout life, impacting the autonomy and freedom of Black people. When these experiences are internalized, the body is unable to adequately discharge the stress load, resulting in poor mental health outcomes for the Black population. Frequently underestimated, these effects on the Black population are still scarcely recognized by psychological and psychiatric diagnostic systems, which contributes to the silencing and invisibilization of the psychological suffering resulting from this violence. Considering this reality, this project aims to develop a clinical treatment protocol based on the Emotion-Focused Therapy approach, directed toward the treatment of racial trauma in Black adults. To this end, the construction of the protocol will be developed in two complementary stages: (1) conducting an integrative literature review on racial trauma and its impacts on emotional regulation; (2) formulating a fictitious case study inspired by existing publications of the Emotion-Focused Therapy approach and by recurrent experiences observed in clinical practice with this population. It is important to emphasize that this therapy presents itself as a promising approach for developing treatment protocols for Black individuals who experience racial trauma, due to its humanistic and experiential nature, which places emotion as a central category for diagnosing and transforming maladaptive emotional schemes.
