SUMMARY:

Executive functions (EF) are complex cognitive abilities essential for planning, organization, execution, and monitoring of behavior, and are therefore crucial for daily functioning. Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), a chronic mental illness characterized by extreme mood episodes (mania/hypomania and depression), exhibit significant deficits in these functions, which negatively affect their functioning and social integration. Study I aimed to map the scientific knowledge available on the performance patterns of EF in individuals with early-onset versus late-onset BD, seeking to identify potential differences between these subgroups. A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed, LILACS, and SciELO databases, resulting in the selection and analysis of seven articles. The findings suggest that early-onset BD is associated with greater global functional impairment and subtle cognitive alterations, whereas late-onset BD appears to present more pronounced deficits in specific EF domains. Study II proposes to assess EF performance in adults diagnosed with BD in order to identify characteristic cognitive profiles and their potential clinical implications. This section will present the sample description, instruments, procedures, and data analysis method.
