SUMMARY:

Humanizing care can be understood as values that guide people's behavior, put into practice through actions that promote good communication, ethical commitments, shared responsibilities, and conduct that improves interpersonal relationships in healthcare, the work environment, service management, and health education. This qualitative, descriptive study focuses on humanizing care with an emphasis on embracement and its potential contributions to tertiary healthcare, in light of the National Humanization Policy (PNH). Its purpose is to investigate what humanizing care means to nursing professionals, technicians and nurses, and to understand how they articulate their practice with this construct from the perspective of embracement, in the hospital context of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The premise is that healthcare professionals have difficulty relating the understanding of humanizing care to professional practice with a view to the comprehensive care advocated by the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The study intends to be conducted in a general, municipal hospital that provides multidisciplinary care to the population of a small town in the southern interior of Rio de Janeiro state. To this end, a semi-structured interview guide and a self-administered sociodemographic and professional questionnaire, developed specifically for this study, will be used as instruments. The data obtained will be analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis. It is believed that it will be possible to understand the initiatives and difficulties of nursing professionals regarding the understanding and development of practices guided by the principles of humanizing care, highlighting the need for better training and professional support. It is hoped that this will foster discussions that encourage research and professional training focused on humanizing care, with the potential to contribute to improving the quality of health services and programs in the hospital setting, especially in Intensive Care Units.
