RESUMO:

Cancer is the second cause of death among children and teenagers. Although the chances of the disease’s remission have increased in the last decades, cancer illness requires long, invasive treatments with side effects, that may lead to physical, cognitive, emotional and social damages to children who experience this diagnosis, with impairments on their quality of life levels. In order to provide emotional support to children and their families and to prevent or mitigate these adverse effects, psychologists who work in pediatric oncology make use of psychosocial interventions. This research proposes the investigation, in a quantitative and qualitative manner, of the psychosocial strategies used by psychologists in the direct assistance of children with cancer. The objective is to understand the processes of the intervention conducted by these professionals in a hospital environment, according to their self-reports, considering the objectives and characteristics of the interventions that are used, as well as possible influences of variables such as a child's age range, type of cancer treatment and basic theoretical framework. It is intended to have a participation of approximately 60 psychologists, with at least two years of experience in the field of pediatric oncology, who work in Brazil or abroad. To achieve the objectives, an electronic questionnaire composed of closed questions, organized in two parts, was created and will be applied online. The first part aims to collect sociodemographic and professional information of the participants, while the second will gather data about the psychosocial interventions used by the professional with children with different types of cancer diagnosis. In a second moment, individual semi-structured interview will be conducted, in-person or online, with six psychologists to further investigate their professional practices in the field. The data obtained through the use of the questionnaire will be submitted to a descriptive statistical analysis, while the reports from the interviews will be analyzed and categorized according to Bardin’s content analysis. Thus, it is expected to obtain a profile of the performances of psychologists in pediatric oncology, as well as perform a systematization of the psychosocial interventions they use, comparing the experience of professionals in Brazil and other countries. The relevancy of this study lies in the possibility of broadening the knowledge on how psychologists work in a context of suffering and vulnerabilities, in order to provide subsidies for interventions that aim to reduce developmental damages of children who experience cancer.
