SUMMARY:

The influence of religiosity/spirituality of people living with HIV/Aids on their beliefs that threaten health, coping methods and adherence to antiretroviral therapy is still little known and therefore needs further investigation. Thus, the general objective of this research, with a cross-sectional and correlational design, was to analyze the associations between religious / spiritual experiences and practices and the religious/spiritual coping strategies of HIV-positive individuals, as well as between these and measures of perception of HIV. illness, adherence to antiretroviral medication and emotional state. The study included 101 users diagnosed with HIV/Aids who were being followed up in an outpatient service at a university hospital. Participants responded to the following instruments: Sociodemographic and Medical-Clinical Questionnaire, Duke Religiosity Index Scale (DUREL), Questionnaire for Assessing Adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment (CEAT-HIV), Disease Perception Questionnaire Brief Version (Brief IPQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Abbreviated Spiritual Religious Coping Scale (CRE-Breve). Descriptive statistical analyzes (frequencies and means) and Spearman's correlation analyzes were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 24. The results indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between positive coping strategies with organizational religiosity (r = 0.58; p <0.01), non-organizational religiosity (r = 0.48; p <0.01) and intrinsic religiosity (r = 0.57; p <0.01), suggesting that the greater the use of adaptive strategies, the greater the frequency of religious meetings, practices carried out individually and, above all, the integral search for religiosity. There was also a negative correlation between perception of disease and intrinsic religiosity (r = -0.24; p <0.01) and treatment adherence (r = -0.39; <0.00). It concludes by the evidence of the association between religious/spiritual aspects and psychological variables under study when it comes to people living with HIV/Aids.
