SUMMARY:

The experience of a chronic disease commonly affects the quality of life of individuals and their families, in addition to the treatment having an economic impact on the health system. Asthma is considered one of the main non-communicable chronic diseases that affect people in adolescence, a phase of the life cycle marked by psychosocial conflicts. The limitations imposed by sudden asthma attacks can trigger depressive and anxious symptoms and contribute to the worsening of the attacks, generating a picture of comorbidities. This research aims to analyze the effects of a personalized and individual psychological intervention, based on the Cognitive-Behavioral, with a focus on Schemas, on the emotional state and on the occurrence of asthma attacks in adolescents. Three adolescents, of both sexes, with partially controlled or uncontrolled asthma for more than six months will participate. The research will be divided into three stages: a) assessment of the profile of the asthmatic adolescent, b) psychological intervention and c) reassessment. In the evaluation, the clinical investigation will follow criteria and instruments based on the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), with the Asthma Control Test - ACT being chosen to verify asthma control. The psychological profile will be described from clinical interviews with adolescents and their guardians, aiming at the anamnesis and conceptualization of the case, as well as the application of the following instruments: Typological Assessment Questionnaire - QUATI, Youth Scheme Questionnaire for Adolescents - QEA (abbreviated form), EID Coping Questionnaire, Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children - MASC and Baptist Depression Scale - Version for Children and Youth - EBADEP-IJ. The intervention will take place in twelve individual weekly sessions, whose objective is to facilitate a new form of behavioral activation and cognitive restructuring through changes in dysfunctional schemas and in the participants' way of coping. After the intervention, a new clinical assessment of asthma will be carried out to check whether asthma was controlled, as well as whether there was a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression after changes in schemes and ways of coping. Intra-subject analyzes will be performed, in which each participant acts as their own control, from the comparison of scores obtained through standardized instruments at different times of data collection. In addition, qualitative analyzes of the participants' reports will be carried out, in which changes in knowledge, behaviors and beliefs related to the objectives of the intervention will be considered. The hypothesis is that the proposed intervention can change depressive and anxiety symptoms and, thus, reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks. Thus, it is expected to contribute to a better understanding and management of the psychological aspects associated with asthma attacks, strengthening the feasibility and importance of such an intervention in the context of the treatment of asthma in adolescence.
