Violence against women is a social phenomenon that occurs in all classes and age groups. Presenting itself in different ways and manifesting a structuring factor of gender inequalities. For a long time this type of violence was protected by principles of the inviolability of private life, but it was through feminist movements that the issue gained a public and collective dimension. Data on domestic violence in Brazil are alarming and with the advent of social isolation, due to the pandemic caused by the new Corona virus, the rates worsened even further. The present research sought to understand the phenomenon of domestic violence against women based on Jeffrey E. Young's Schema Theory and his concepts on Maladaptive Initial Schemas and Schematic Modes. In this conception, the initial experiences with our caregivers and other representative development figures will influence our future relationships, they will be models for new relationships. The main objective of the study was to identify Maladaptive Initial Schemas and Schematic Modes in a sample of 20 women victims of domestic violence in Baixada Fluminense - RJ. The research was carried out in the field through the methodological perspective of Ecological Insertion. The findings were analyzed in two stages: the first with a survey of quantitative data, Questionnaire of Schemes, Inventory of Modes, Sociodemographic data; the second, through the investigation and study of qualitative data, interviews and field observations, through Bardin's content analysis. The results show that Initial Maladaptive Schemas, mainly in the first domain (Disconnection and Rejection) and in the fourth (Direction to the other), are variables that increase women's vulnerability to domestic violence. Violence in the context of the nuclear family is also a risk factor for the formation of Initial Maladaptive Schemas and for the maintenance of this phenomenon in future generations.
