SUMMARY:

This dissertation seeks to propose pedagogical strategies that promote the reading skills of 9th grade students of Elementary School in public basic education, based on the understanding that reading goes beyond the simple decoding of words and sentences, encompassing multiple layers of meaning and critical reflection. Based on the authors Ingedore Villaça Koch, Vanda Maria Elias, Isabel Solé, Regina Zilberman, Tzvetan Todorov, Paulo Freire and Antonio Candido, the study places literary reading as an inalienable right and understands literature as essential for the formation of human beings and their insertion in society. The work "Father Against Mother", by Machado de Assis, is the focus of the sequence of activities that aims to promote the development of critical reading and aesthetic understanding of literary language, emphasizing the role of literature as a space for reflection on ethical and social dilemmas. The methodology used is qualitative and exploratory, based on a bibliographic review, and seeks to provide support for pedagogical practice in the classroom. The expectation is that the work will contribute to the formation of more conscious and reflective citizens, valuing the transformative role of literature in education.
