THE USE OF CARD GAMES AS A STRATEGY TO TEACH VERB MOODS
Card game, verb moods, Portuguese, playful teaching.
This research project aims to investigate the use of card games, specifically Pokémon TCG, as a pedagogical tool to teach 9th graders metalinguistic content related to verb moods. The general goal is to implement a practice that promotes playful and contextualized learning, overcoming the apathy that permeates traditional Portuguese language classes. The methodology involves exploring the text in the game’s cards to encourage reading, interpretation and speaking skills that are necessary to play the game and that reflect the use of language in human communication. The analysis of the verb moods found in texts and speech will be carried out through systematized exercises, promoting interaction amongst the students and the collective creation of an all-new card game. The expected results include students that are more engaged in learning activities, understand grammatical concepts better and can identify different forms of oral and written communication using the game’s dynamics. The goal of implementing a more playful curriculum is not only to improve grades in Portuguese, but to also bring the content closer to the students' realities, creating a more meaningful and effective learning. In summary, this approach aims to cultivate essential skills for the students’ academic and social development, and to promote a more interactive teaching process that is aligned with our contemporary society. The expected result of the proposed method is to ingrain grammatical awareness in the students, especially regarding verb moods and other linguistic characteristics, and to promote an effective, lasting and fun learning experience.
