SUMMARY:

This project aims to develop the reading proficiency of 9th-grade middle school students by designing and implementing a didactic mediation based on the short story genre. In line with the guidelines of the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN) (Brazil, 1998), the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) (Brazil, 2017), and the Documento Norteador Curricular (DNC) of Mangaratiba (Mangaratiba, 2022), the municipality where the school applying the proposal is located, the project intends to explore reading strategies that foster critical interpretation and comprehension of texts. The choice of the short story is justified by its accessible language, engaging narrative, and potential to develop multiple reading skills. In addition, its relatively brief structure facilitates the planning of diversified didactic activities. Methodologically, the project is grounded in the principles of action research (Thiollent, 1986; Tripp, 2005; Thiollent; Colette, 2014), and the mediation process will involve three main stages: diagnosis of students’ reading competencies, implementation of pedagogical workshops with selected short stories, and assessment of learning. The workshops will combine pre-reading, reading, and post-reading stages (Solé, 1998) with an approach to textual referencing (Richard; Werneck; Teixeira, 2013). It is expected that working with short stories will enhance students’ interpretive capacity, developing skills such as identifying narrative voices; constructing meaning from implicit and explicit elements; and comparing different perspectives. Ultimately, the project seeks to contribute to the formation of critical and autonomous readers, aligned with contemporary demands for complex reading competencies.
