SUMMARY:

In popular varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, the marking of number and person on the verb in relation to plural subjects does not always align with the prescriptions of normative instruments (cf. Vieira, 2016), a phenomenon that is reflected in students' writing. Thus, this study aims to develop a pedagogical mediation with subject-verb agreement in texts written by 6th-grade middle school students through the stylistic monitoring continuum. To achieve this, an action research methodology will be adopted (Tripp, 2005; Thiollent; Colette, 2014), in which students and the teacher-researcher work together to find solutions for an identified learning need: the use of subject-verb agreement according to the writing practices of literate society. The theoretical framework of this research is grounded by authors such as Weinreich, Labov, and Herzog (2006), who laid the foundation for variational studies; Bortoni-Ricardo (2004, 2005), who established variation continua to understand diversity in Brazilian Portuguese; and Franchi (2006), who describes linguistic, epilinguistic, and metalinguistic activities for grammar teaching, which will be applied in the pedagogical mediation to be developed.
