SUMMARY:

This dissertation proposes a teaching module designed for 7th-grade students to foster an understanding of the referential processes involving subject phenomena (overt and null subjects in the third person) and third-person anaphoric direct objects (ADO). These elements facilitate anaphoric reference and contribute to clear, cohesive, and coherent writing by avoiding redundancy and aligning the text more closely with written norms. The study aims to develop educational activities that enable students to consciously manage the use of overt and null subjects, as well as the four strategies for third-person anaphoric direct objects—noun phrase, lexical pronoun, accusative clitic pronoun, and null direct object—depending on the specific linguistic context. While normative Portuguese grammars traditionally recognize the "hidden" (null) subject, students often find it easier to use subject pronouns (*ele/ela/eles/elas*) to refer back to an antecedent in a subsequent clause; this is likely due to the tendency in Brazilian Portuguese to avoid empty subject positions. Furthermore, the use of third-person anaphoric direct objects exhibits significant variants that mirror spoken language—such as the use of the lexical pronoun *ele/ela(s)* to function as a direct object. Particular emphasis is placed on activities that develop students' competence and skills in using third-person anaphoric direct objects realized through the clitic pronouns *o, a, os, as* and their variants. The research's methodological basis and the description of the didactic approach employed follow action research procedures (Tripp, 2005). Regarding theoretical aspects, the foundation lies in normative grammars (Cunha & Cintra, 2001; Rocha Lima, 2007; Cegalla, 2020), linguistic studies (Antunes, 2003 and 2005; Koch & Elias, 2013 and 2015; Marcuschi, 2008; Neves, 2006), variationist sociolinguistic studies (Weinreich, Labov, & Herzog, 2006 [1968]; Bortoni-Ricardo, 2004), and Tripp (2005).
