SUMMARY:

This study intends to contribute to the development of the lexical competence of the students of the 6th year of Elementary School, considering that the absence of vocabulary repertoire is, currently, one of the main causes of the difficulties of comprehension and textual production that students of this level of education, in general, have. The methodology of the research is based on principles of collaborative learning (BEHRENS, 2000), which will provoke investigative activities of words from the most diverse communicative contexts in which the students are inserted. The objective is to expand the lexical repertoire of the students through a didactic proposal that is based on theoretical assumptions related to linguistic variation (WEINREICH, U.; LABOV, W. & HERZOG, M.L., 2006 [1968]), to the variation continuums, (BORTONI-RICARDO, S. M., 2005, 2004), the literacy and language in use (BRAVIN DOS SANTOS, A. M., 2018),  to communicative and lexical competence (ANTUNES, 2012),  reading and producing text (KOCK, I. V. (Org.), 2010; KOCH, I. V. & ELIAS, V. M., 2011).  We intend to articulate activities that assume that societies are complex constructs of cultural and linguistic diversities that are revealed in both the spoken and written forms of language, in a continuum, the lexicon being the most representative element of this diversity. Being thus, we have the hypothesis that the lexical and communicative competence of the elementary school student will develop in a more productive process if it occurs through actions that consider the reality of the language in use and not an idealized language. Thus, it´s possible that the students involved in this activities discover new words and their meanings, both in speech and in writing, to interpret and to produce texts, according to their level of knowledge, in various domains of Portuguese.
